What does it look like when religious communities actively engage and collaborate with the LGBTQIA+ community?
This Pride month, we are excited to spotlight Luce grantees who are committed to fostering interconnectedness and building deeper relationships across various cultural and spiritual landscapes.
Lighthouse Foundation of Chicagoland is a Black LGBTQ+-led, multiracial social justice organization that advances justice for Black LGBTQ+ people across Chicagoland through empowerment, education, and entertainment. Central to The Lighthouse Foundation’s mission is the concept of Spiritual Wellness, which asserts that healing and meaningful connection are fundamental to achieving true liberation. Their initiatives create nurturing and inclusive spaces where individuals can find refuge from social isolation, confront and heal from religious trauma, and enhance their overall mental well-being.
By promoting an environment where spirituality can be explored on one’s own terms, The Lighthouse Foundation empowers individuals to reclaim their spiritual identities and fosters the development of robust, affirming communities that celebrate diversity and inclusion.
In a similar vein, the National LGBTQ Task Force’s initiative, Queering Faith, underscores the critical relationship between equity and religious freedom.
This vital work seeks to reshape the dominant narratives about faith in both the media and public discourse, highlighting LGBTQ individuals as integral members and influential leaders within religious communities, and challenging conventional views that often marginalize their voices.
