Description

The Path to Paradise will be the first major, scholarly assessment of the 35-year career of Judith Schaechter (b. 1961), a self-described “Militant Ornamentalist” who has reinvented stained-glass processes and the traditional subjects long associated with the medium.  The exhibition will include 45 of the artist’s stained-glass panels, achieved by painting, engraving, and sandblasting designs into layers of colorful flash glass.  Schaechter’s unruly subjects, which explore female sexuality and universal religious themes of damnation and redemption, originate in sources as divergent as medieval manuscripts, Pre-Raphaelite paintings, and MAD Magazine .  Throughout, Schaechter transgresses the boundaries that have delimited art and craft, so-called women’s work, and the sacred and secular.
