Description
SEAREG, a multi-campus initiative headquartered at Duke, supports research on Southeast Asia—quantitative and qualitative, historical and contemporary—that engages with theoretical insights from political science, sociology, public policy, economic theory, studies of public opinion, and history. A key emphasis is the uniting of deep area knowledge with rigorous and replicable social science research approaches. Our grant would enable SEAREG to continue its annual conferences in North America and Southeast Asia, train scholars on how to communicate their findings to broader publics and offer pre-dissertation grants. SEAREG invests in mentorship for emerging scholars, with particular attention to the needs of members of historically underrepresented groups, including women, people of color, and those of Southeast Asian heritage. With this grant, it also proposes pre-doctoral fellowships and an accompanying mentorship and training program aimed at developing pathways for students from Southeast Asia who aspire to pursue graduate studies in the social sciences.  This grant would advance the Asia Program’s Goal 1a (Support the continued development of Southeast Asian Studies). Â
