Description

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace has been a long-time partner of the Henry Luce Foundation, especially in the area of religion in international affairs. The Endowment’s American Statecraft program focuses on the formation and administration of US foreign policy, including the views of citizens about this policy. Researchers in the statecraft program have been seeking to understand Black Americans’ opinions about foreign policy and the degree to which they shape voting behavior and political sentiments. In the context of the 2024 election campaign, race has become a particular focus of some candidates’ messaging. Endowment researchers want to take advantage of this moment to deepen their understanding of Black Americans’ political perspectives by asking them about the racial/ethnic identity and descendancy of candidates. Is the rhetoric of identity being deployed in the campaign affecting how Black Americans perceive the candidates? Does it reveal a shift in how Black Americans see themselves in relation to candidates of color? The Endowment will partner with YouGov to conduct a survey prior to the election that will shed some light on these questions.
