Description
Good Morning Indian Country (GMIC) is an award-winning Native-student led weekly live streamed news and information program covering issues and events of importance to the local Indigenous community and across Indian Country. GMIC is produced collaboratively by students from Haskell Indian Nations University (HINU) and journalism students from the University of Kansas (KU). Teh primary mission of GMIC is to prepare Native young people for careers in journalism and media by teaching them the skills needed to work as visual storytellers: producers, videographers, reporters, anchors, production personnel, and social media content creators. Native individuals have always been underrepresented in the demographic data of non-Native newsrooms nationwide; GMIC hopes to provide a pathway for more representation in those employment demographics with the long-term goal of improving Native representation in news media content nationwide. This grant will allow for the purchase of updated equipment at HINU and KU; provide GMIC students with opportunities to travel to professional conferences to present and discuss their work and why it matters and network with other professionals to grow their network related to internship, fellowship, and job opportunities; and provide modest stipends to GMIC students for their time and travel related to producing GMIC.Â
