Description

One of two exhibitions on this year’s slate that are part of the 2024 Getty initiative “Pacific Standard Time: Art X Science Collide,” “Future Imaginaries” will explore the nearly half-century-old phenomenon of Indigenous Futurism with a wide array of work by leading contemporary Native American artists and designers. Originating with the Red Power and American Indian Movements in the 1970s, Indigenous Futurism blends traditional Native knowledge systems and canonical science fiction tropes to reimagine sovereignty and sustainable lifeways in futuristic modes and settings. Including sculpture, photography, fashion, and installation, the exhibition will feature forms and images of cosmic beings, time travel, and new worlds that envision alternative and more just futures. “Future Imaginaries” will advance a powerful throughline in contemporary Native American art. The accompanying publication will include original fiction and visual essays by artists in the exhibition.
This grant aligns with the AAP strategic goal 1a: To advance innovative museum projects that prioritize representation and equity through the preservation, study, and presentation of work by under-represented artists of color, collaborations with diverse external partners, and outreach to underserved communities.
