Description
Recommendation of a grant of $12,500 to the SEASREP Foundation, Inc. for a convening of Southeast Asian and ASEAN Studies Centers in Southeast Asia
In January 2020, our Special Grant of $50,000 to the SEASREP Foundation supported a mapping study to describe the state of Southeast Asian Studies (SEAS) in Southeast Asia, assess needs and concerns of the field there, and provide recommendations aimed at addressing those needs. Although the pandemic delayed the project and necessitated changes to plans, SEASREP produced a study based on data gathered (through virtual means) by country teams on the diverse range of SEAS in the region in terms of teaching, research, publications, and conferences; case studies on SEAS programs at Naresuan University (Thailand), Vietnam National University Hanoi, and Universitas Gadjah Mada (Indonesia); “think pieces” on the state of the field by young Southeast Asian scholars; and face-to-face discussions during a concluding workshop after travel restrictions were lifted. The study is worth further dissemination. The recommended grant would allow SEASREP to convene representatives from a core group of regional centers to discuss findings and potential collaborations, and reinforce networks. A list of potential invitees is attached to the application. SEASREP’s NGOSource certification is current.
