Description

In consultation with the national, non-profit artists collective, “For Freedoms,” Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) is organizing “We the People,” an interactive exhibition, and accompanying publication and programs, that will explore and celebrate democracy and democratic practices. In 2023 through 2024, the exhibition will tour to all five of SAMA’s sites (Altoona, Bedford, Ligonier, Loretto, and Johnstown), across this rural and culturally under-served region of south-central Pennsylvania. Engaging local artists who are committed to working in support of democratic ideals, SAMA seeks to apolitically engage its publics in considering how democracy works and how they can become more involved in advancing it. Grant funds would support loans and installation of art at each of the five venues, the accompany publication, and in-person and virtual programs. Because accessibility, including overcoming the economic barriers to art, is at the forefront of SAMA’s mission, all the SAMA venues welcome visitors free-of-charge.
