Description

Co-organized by the BMA and the Saint Louis Art Museum, “The Culture” will be the first comprehensive exhibition to advance a sweeping social art history of Hip Hop, which emerged in 1973 as a form of expression originated by Black, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx youth to assert and celebrate cultural difference and self-definition. Marking the phenomenon’s fiftieth anniversary, the exhibition will present a wide array of works across media—including painting, sculpture, installation, photography, and video–to explore this now-mainstream cultural form. It will also delve into the contemporary topics associated with the subjects and aesthetic strategies of Hip Hop, such as gender, appropriation, technology, and the marketplace. “The Culture” will tour across the U.S. and to Europe.Â
