Through a grant to the Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting, the Luce Foundation is proud to have supported the work of Megha Rajagopalan, Alison Killing, and Christo Buschek whose investigative journalism on China’s suppression of Uighurs in Xinjiang was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting. Published as a series of interactive articles on BuzzFeed News, “Built to Last” reveals how the team used satellite imagery and interviews with ex-detainees to create detailed renderings of prison camps, demonstrating the extent of China’s efforts to detain Muslim minorities.
We are also delighted for 2011–12 Luce Scholar Abbie VanSickle who led a team of reporters from the Marshall Project, AL.com, IndyStar and Invisible Institute that was honored with a Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting. Their investigative series “Mauled” exposed how police dogs across the nation are employed as weapons, often against innocent citizens. The project also won the Katharine Graham Award for Courage and Accountability from the White House Correspondents’ Association and was a finalist for the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting.
