Description

The Center proposes to continue its examination of connections between Asia and the Americas through the movements of populations, ideas and economic resources rather than fixed geographic entities. Funds will support doctoral dissertation fellows and summer researchers as well as a student-organized symposium, an ongoing speakers’ seminar involving book talks, films and performances, and an open access book series. An Indigenous Asian Americans workshop and resulting publication will investigate the histories and politics of Indigenous peoples from East, Southeast, and South Asia, in diasporic context. Transpacific Studies is seen as a growth area by the USC administration. A new position in Transpacific Literature has been approved for the departments of English and Comparative Literature.

This grant would advance the Asia Program’s Goal 1 (Maintain the vitality of Asian studies), Goal 3 (Enhance public awareness of and engagement with Asians and Asian Americans) and Goal 5 (Support border-crossing work).
