Description
The Joyce Theater Foundation has submitted a proposal to the New York City premiere of “Children of Dharma”, a production from the Ragamala Dance Company. Ragamala is a women-led, intergenerational dance company and cultural arts organization based in the South Asian immigrant communities of Minnesota. Ragamala teaches and practices Bharatanatyam, a South Indian classical dance form, with emphasis on the dynamic living tension between the ancient and the contemporary. Their artistic work and community engagement communicates intercultural and immigrant narratives, reminding us of the enduring value of kinship and collective knowledge. This grant would support five public performances of “Children of Dharma” (January 1-8, 2025) coordinated with community activities to deepen audience engagement. Dharma is an evening-length multidisciplinary work for eight dancers, drawing inspiration from the ancient Sanskrit epic, Mahabharata, compelling audiences to consider universal themes of duty, righteousness, and the battle between good and evil.
