Description

Recommendation of Special Grant of $35,000 to Boston College for a postdoctoral fellowship at the Ricci Institute for Chinese-Western Cultural History
The Ricci Institute, established in 1984, promotes interdisciplinary research on Chinese-Western cultural exchange. Its library, one of the largest specialized collections of its kind in the U.S., houses archival material related to the history of the Christian missions in China. The Institute recently relocated from the University of San Francisco to Boston College. A 2016 HLF grant is supporting an initiative to extend the Institute’s research to other parts of East Asia—to examine historical connections across traditions as well as local narratives and histories. It aims to help bridge historical divides, foster collaboration and build scholarly networks. As the proposal explains, the pandemic disrupted programming and scheduling, necessitating a no-cost extension. A special grant would enable three additional postdoctoral fellows to join the Institute’s final summer of activities under the 2016 grant.
