This grant will continue the American Art Program’s support for the Luce/ACLS Dissertation Fellowships in American Art, overseen by the ACLS since 1991. Support will underwrite seven fellowships annually across three academic years beginning in 2024, each consisting of a $38,000 stipend and $4,000 in travel funds. This flexible support, free of residency requirements, is offered to graduate students working on topics in the history of the visual arts of the United States at any stage of PhD dissertation research or writing. The esteemed reputation of Luce/ACLS dissertation fellowships rests on the outstanding achievements of prior recipients in academic and museum settings. Applicants are vetted by a selection committee of five senior scholars who represent a wide range of institutional backgrounds, field specialties, gender, race and ethnicity. A recent expansion of eligibility criteria to include applicants from any humanities department where art is studied has led to a significant diversification of the applicant pool and annual awardees. ACLS will continue its expanded outreach to increase the fellowship’s visibility.
