Description

SG recommendation of $75,000 to the Asian American Journalists Association for Journalism X Democracy Featured Panel Series at AAJA 2023 Annual Convention.
One goal of the Asia Program’s AAPI portfolio grantmaking is to help AAPIs share their stories to increase awareness and shift public narratives. Media and journalism play a central role in this.   HLF funding would support AAJA, a new partner, to organize a series of branded panels and a roundtable at its 2023 annual convention in Washington, D.C., under the theme of “Building Our Collective Power.” Journalists and experts will delve into key questions centering on the state of democracy both in the U.S. and around the globe, and how Asian American journalists can utilize their storytelling power to tackle systematic challenges and shape American perceptions of Asians and Asian Americans. In addition, pending final confirmation with its collaborator APIAVote, scholarships will bring AAPI community leaders to the convention. Their voices are critical at the grassroots level, but they often lack the opportunity and resources to participate.    This event will be part of the series of convenings on narrative change that HLF, through the AAPI portfolio and DEPT, is supporting in 2023. Previous events include the Center for Asian American Media convening on narrative change in Washington, D.C. and three meetings-in-conjunction at the Association for Asian American Studies annual conference in Long Beach, CA.    The grant would advance Asia’s Goal 3 (Enhance public awareness of and engagement with Asians and Asian Americans, and counter misunderstanding and misinformation by elevating Asian and AAPI Stories).
