Description

The Institute for Nonprofit News ( INN ) represents and supports 450 independent news organizations and the 4,500 journalists they employ. These range from well-established news outlets like CalMatters and the Texas Tribune to tiny, hyperlocal operations like Los Angeles’ Boyle Heights Beat and the Sopris Sun in Carbondale, CO. A Luce Foundation grant will support NewsMatch, a funding program that matches revenue raised by news organizations from local sources, encouraging them to become more sustainable. Since its launch, NewsMatch participants have leveraged $31 million into $300 million in local contributions. Luce funding will also be used to support collaborative reporting projects among newsrooms. INN has had success nurturing the Rural News Network, which facilitates cooperation among small news operations to produce more ambitious projects like “At the Crossroads,” which examined economic opportunity for Indigenous peoples, and “Inundated,” which focused on water issues around the Great Lakes.Â
