Description

A 24-month grant of $250,000 for Indonesian Studies and the study of Indonesians in America: Public Programs, Research and Film.   Total Budget:                                                  $355,040, 70% funded by HLF Other sources of support:                              US Department of Education, Council of American Overseas Research Centers (DoS), and participating Title VI Centers for Southeast Asian studies.   Our grant to AIFIS, an American Overseas Research Center, will support activities not covered by its funding from the US Departments of Education and State: fellowships for Indonesian scholars to conduct collaborative research in the US; the launch of a documentary film program to create open-source media and curricular content on topics related to Indonesia and the Indonesian diaspora in America; continuation of academic writing workshops to build the capacity of Indonesian scholars to publish in international forums; and a small grants program for public-facing events in the US. It will also assist with an annual virtual Indonesian studies conference in partnership with Michigan State University, and staff compensation. As the world’s largest majority Muslim democracy, Indonesia offers important lessons on an array of scholarly and policy-relevant issues, including Islam and religious pluralism, gender equality, and environmental sustainability.   HLF helped launch AIFIS with a small grant in 2011 and has since provided it several grants for scholarly exchange and programming.   This grant would advance Asia’s Goal 1(b) (support the continued development of Southeast Asian studies ) .
