Description

Beginning in the 1970s, the Hopi tribal nation envisioned creating a tribal museum that could house Hopi cultural materials and educate the Hopi community about its history and heritage. After several decades, the tribal government authorized the establishment of a not-for-profit entity to begin programming and to plan and build a Hopi cultural center. That organization, called Hopivewat, is negotiating to secure the use of land from one of Hopi’s 12 villages. It is also collecting oral histories and sharing these with the community. A grant will provide much-needed core support to Hopivewat for the next three years as the organization finalizes agreements with the host village and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, raises funds for construction, and continues community programming.Â
