Description

This grant to the Burke Museum will fund tandem allied projects. The first will activate the Burke Museum’s collections while growing ethical relationships with Indigenous students, Indigenous Asian Peoples, and organizations in Oceania, the Philippines, and Taiwan. Alongside the leadership and research skills of Indigenous students at the University of Washington, the Burke will lead an Oceanic Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Institute convening focused on the artistic and cultural application of Oceanic STEAM knowledge. Further, a course will be created that documents Indigenous Peoples’ responses to nuclear legacies in Asia and Oceania. The second project is a renewal of 2021 American Art Program support for Connections to Northwest Native Culture, through which the Burke seeks to advance the practice of Native artists through access to its historical collections. Grants to visiting Native artists and researchers and staff outreach to grantees and communities facilitate reconnections to cultural belongings and the reciprocal transmission of artistic and cultural knowledge.
