Description

Carnegie Museum of Art (CMA) is embarking on a comprehensive reimagining and reinstallation of the museum’s 16 permanent collection galleries that will foreground curatorial research, visitor inquiry, and the histories and contexts of CMA and Pittsburgh. The project will be grounded in a process of exploration, including a series of seminars with external scholars and partners, through which the project team will re-examine inherited narratives about art and artists represented in the collection and about CMA’s own history and practices. Key collection areas, including the body of work by Pittsburgh Courier photographer Teenie Harris, will be featured along with galleries that explore artistic practice and expansive ideas across chronologies and media. A key goal of the work will be to engage visitors in inclusive art-based dialogues relevant to the complexities of contemporary American life.
This grant aligns with the AAP strategic goal 1a: To advance innovative museum projects that prioritize representation and equity through the preservation, study, and presentation of work by under-represented artists of color, collaborations with diverse external partners, and outreach to underserved communities.Â
