Description

The AAP very occasionally funds stand-alone publications, when a proposed volume is anticipated to make a significant contribution to the field, or when the project is the only available means to support a promising organization. The Carnwath-Knecht-Frey Artists’ Legacy Foundation (CKFALF) will produce the first monograph publication on Viola Frey (1933-2004), a significant interdisciplinary artist primarily known for her ceramic works, but whose multifaceted career deserves greater attention. Titled  Artist’s Mind/Studio/World ,   the 250-page book is inspired by a body of artwork Frey made in the 1990s, and will present new scholarship paired with Artists’ Legacy Foundation’s research and archival discoveries, photos of the artist’s studios, an illustrated, biographical chronology, and three 3,000-word essays by invited writers exploring Frey’s career and studio practice. This publication will focus on both major and lesser-known artworks, such as Frey’s commanding paintings and works on paper, as well as her celebrated clay sculptures, and includes more than 175 images. The proposed grant would support remaining book design fees, image editing, and print production.
This grant aligns with the AAP strategic goal 1a: To advance innovative museum projects that prioritize representation and equity through the preservation, study, and presentation of work by under-represented artists of color, collaborations with diverse external partners, and outreach to underserved communities.
