Description

In the course of the AAP’s annual loan exhibition competition, we regularly offer discretionary grant funds for worthy publications associated with exhibition projects that have been eliminated in one of the rounds. Such is the case with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (SRGM) will present  Going Dark: The Contemporary Figure at the Edge of Visibility , a fall 2023 exhibition exploring the “semi-visible” figure with artwork presented by a multigenerational, multiracial group of contemporary artists working in a range of media. Although the ambitious exhibition was not fully-developed enough to fare well in the 2022 competition, the accompanying catalogue, now compellingly conceived, promises to make a significant contribution to the field. In addition to 140 color images, it will feature essays by a roster of contributors including curators James, Key Jo Lee, Legacy Russell, Abbe Schriber, and Jordan Carter; poets Rio Cortez, Marwa Helal, Harmony Holiday, and Kevin Young; and artists Ayanna Dozier, Kristian Henson, Nontsikelelo Mutiti, and Hassan Rahim. The proposed grant would support costs including fees for author honoraria, graphic design, image permissions, proofreading, and printing.
This grant aligns with the AAP strategic goal 1a: To advance innovative museum projects that prioritize representation and equity through the preservation, study, and presentation of work by under-represented artists of color, collaborations with diverse external partners, and outreach to underserved communities.
