Description

Dia and the Menil Collection, in Houston, are co-organizing the first comprehensive survey of Greek-born American artist Chryssa (1933–2013), who first emerged as a prominent voice in New York’s art milieu of the late 1950s. Under-recognized today, Chryssa was a pioneer in the use of neon, creating works that bridged pop, conceptual art, and minimalism. The exhibition will present a comprehensive array of the artist’s sculptural and canvas-based works, and collages. A highlight will be a large group of Chryssa’s later works in neon and metal, which feature advertising references, electronically timed rhythms of light and darkness, and neon elements incorporated into framed works. The exhibition will have a third venue in Chicago.
