Description

A first-time Luce grantee, the Frist Art Museum will present an exhibition of 75 contemporary collage or collage-informed works that express the breadth of Black identity. “Multiplicity” will draw on an intergenerational community of emerging, midcareer, and established artists at work in regional centers (Baltimore, Chicago, Memphis, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis) as well as in New York and Los Angeles. It will explore how the collage aesthetic invented by the European avant-garde and embraced by seminal 20th century African American artists, including Romare Bearden, has evolved into a much-employed vehicle of expression for contemporary African American artists who seek to create works that embody the complexity of Black experience.
