Description
The Alaska Native Museum Sovereignty Curatorial Exploration will allow for the experimentation of new curatorial methods and explore how to extend curation beyond museum walls. The project is focused across three themes: Imaq (From our oceans), Nuna (Of and on the Land), and Memory Keepers. Each theme will have two artist cohorts, one curatorial gathering, and at least one museum research visit. Cohorts will curate art focused on themes and expect to cover some of the following mediums and topics:Â material harvesting/processing activities; seal skin sewing, salmon skin processing and sewing, and baleen basketry; and climate change and repatriation.
Â
The HLF grant will support two curatorial gatherings (in Halibut Cove and Sitka, Alaska), travel for outreach visits related to this project, project documentation, and consultation with Indigenous scholars to work with the Alaska Native Museum Sovereignty Advisory circle.
Â
The grants focus on gathering Individual arts and scholars aligns with IKI program plan 1a: t o nurture and sustain Indigenous knowledge leaders and their work.
