Description

This grant will allow the organization to host the first ever Indigenous Data Sovereignty conference in the US. But as they note in the proposal, the summit will go beyond just convening attendees, it will conduct visioning session with attendees to create policy-related outputs that assert IDSov and strengthen IDGov. This event will be used to collaboratively create  national standards in the US. for Indigenous data governance and identify ways to enhance Indigenous Peoples’ laws, policies, and systems for Indigenous data sovereignty led by the priorities, vision, and strengths of sovereign Indigenous Peoples for our shared data futures.
This work will allow NNI to build on successful work in the academy and internationally that has raised priorities about Indigenous data sovereignty and governance in the United Nations and other forums. Moreover, other grantees are collaborating with NNI on this conference including the Native Biodata Consortium.
 
The explicit policy focus of this meeting aligns with the 2024 T o invest in the efforts of Indigenous communities and leaders to effectively articulate their needs, aspirations, and ideas within policy ecosystems at the state, regional, national and global levels in ways that build support for Native knowledge systems/work.
