Since 2012, the Luce/ACLS Program in China Studies has sought to strengthen the field by supporting early-career scholars of China. In light of changing conditions in the academy, the Luce Foundation partnered with ACLS to examine the current state of China studies in North America, identify needs and priorities in the field, and make recommendations to redesign the program in a way that will address those needs.

ACLS recently released a report on the specific challenges involved in the production of new knowledge on China and the obstacles faced by the emerging generation of PhDs. It reveals strong interest in China studies and growing demand for China expertise within and beyond the academy—including in journalism, NGO’s, policy institutes, and government—while calling attention to the unique barriers to entering and advancing within the field.

We look forward to further research and activity in this area as ACLS works toward developing a re-envisioned Program in China Studies.
