The Luce Foundation has rolled out a streamlined and simpler grantmaking process. New application forms include fewer questions and a much scaled-back budget form. Reporting has been simplified too: most grantees will complete only two reports which also include fewer questions. Finally, grant agreements have been pared down and the payment process made easier.
“These changes were prompted by the grantee and applicant survey that the Center for Effective Philanthropy conducted last year on the Foundation’s behalf,” said Vice President Sean Buffington. “While most respondents gave the Foundation high marks for accessibility, responsiveness, and understanding of grantees’ work, many also pointed out that the application process was time-consuming.”
Foundation staff spent time revisiting forms and processes, asking what information was truly important to know—and worthy of asking applicants to spend their limited time on. Then, in partnership with consultants, the Foundation redesigned its grant portal to reflect the new, simplified approach. Interested organizations can register to use the portal and submit a concept note for consideration.
