Description

The most ambitious of the exhibtions recommended this year, the Whitney’s will offer the first expansive presention of American art created under the aesthetic and political influence of Mexico’s revolutionary artists of the interwar era.  Works by Mexican masters, including Diego Rivera and José Clemente Orozco, will be shown along with the American canvases and sculptures that bear the imprint and politcal intent of their muscular forms and vocal narratives.  The exhibition will explore the reciprocal travels and networks of communication and influence that shaped an entire generation of American artists, and inspired a social activism new to the American artistic stage.  The exhibition will present 170 works by a diverse roster of 85 artists, including many who felt newly empowered to represent marginalized communities.  It will travel to two additional venues.
