Description

Simple Pleasures will be the first significant exhibition to address the career of Doris Lee,  an artist who established her reputation as an American Scene painter before broadening her activities to include commercial commissions in a variety of media. The exhibition will assemble 65 works including paintings, prints, textiles and ceramics, spanning the 1930s to the 1960s. Lee worked in Woodstock, New York, for the duration of her professional career, associating there with artists including Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Milton Avery. The presentation explores recurring themes and motifs in her work as it evolved into a more abstract mode, including her portrayals of women, and the inspiration she derived from a wide range of folk art. Particular attention will be devoted to the commercial work she increasingly accepted through the Associated American Artists Gallery in the post-war years.
