Description

In partnership with the Menil Collection in Houston, the Whitney will present the first exhibition to explore the critical role of drawing in the practice of renowned sculptor Ruth Asawa (1926–2013). The artist, who sometimes referred to her three-dimensional works as “drawings in space,” employed the practice of drawing to interrogate the physical world and in the process pushed the boundaries of the medium. The exhibition will bring together 100 works and archival materials to offer an unparalleled window into Asawa’s exploratory and resourceful approach to materials, line, surface, and space. It will also dedicate fresh attention to the life and career of an Asian American woman whose originality and achievements have for too long been underrecognized.  The exhibition will also be presented in Houston.
