Description
The Malai (the Makassae word for stranger) Family Archive is a collection of field materials from Shepard and Leona Forman’s ethnographic research among the Makassae, the second largest ethnolinguistic group in Timor-Leste, in the early 1970s. With Luce support, the Forman family hopes to repatriate this collection to the Makassae, who have suffered generational loss of material and intangible heritage throughout the troubled history of Portuguese colonization, Indonesian occupation, UN interregnum, and eventual independence in 2002.
