Description

In 2023, Elizabeth Green of Chalkbeat, Darryl Holliday of City Bureau, and Mike Rispoli of Free Press—the last two organizations are Luce grantees—released their “Roadmap for Local News.” The Roadmap outlined a vision for the future of news in the US, one that focused on the civic information needs of citizens rather than on the financial imperatives of media companies. Intent on implementing the Roadmap’s recommendations, Holliday left City Bureau to devote his energy to the Future of Local News Network (FLN) where many of the Roadmap’s ideas were incubated. FLN provides a forum for leaders and practitioners in the nascent civic media field to share ideas and best practices. In the coming years, FLN plans to continue this work, organizing an annual convening and other smaller scale gatherings and learning opportunities. But it will also expand its scope, commissioning research and launching initiatives and projects proposed by members that will benefit the field broadly.
