Description

The Native Photography Project is a collaboratively conceived and organized exhibition centered upon Indigenous photographic knowledge and practice. Three co-curators and a Curatorial Council of fourteen advisors have created organized an exhibition of 130 photographic works of art and an accompanying publication to herald a new phase in the photographic representation of Native community, life, and experience in fine art museums. Building upon the work of Native scholars, knowledge-sharers, and practitioners, the project traces the intersecting histories of photography and diverse Native cultures from the Rio Grande to the Arctic Circle, and from the late nineteenth to the twenty-first century. It celebrates the legacies of First Nations, Metis, and Native American photographers who emerged from a range of creative backgrounds and their consequential impact upon the medium. A tour is planned.Â
