President Biden restored the boundaries of the Bears Ears National Monument, a site in Utah sacred to five Indigenous nations. Those nations formed the Bears Ears Intertribal Coalition during the Obama Administration to represent them in the development of a plan to manage the National Monument. The Coalition’s work over the last several years has shaped the vision for the Monument and for the Commission that will oversee it. As the Commission is being formed, the Coalition will continue to support the elders and other knowledge holders whom it regularly convenes to work with relevant Federal agencies on on-going planning and management activities. The grant will provide stipends to knowledge keepers and pay for the costs of travel and meetings during this transitional period while the Commission is still being formed.
