Description

As part of its Indigenous Art Futures Initiative, Nevada Museum of Art (NMA) will partner with Native communities of the Great Basin region to create an Indigenous garden that will serve as a platform for educating audiences about Indigenous ecological knowledge and its relevance to understanding climate change and fostering sustainability. Planned for the third-floor rooftop of an expanded wing, the garden will have relevance for the nearby installation of NMA’s Indigenous basket collection, highlighting the sustainable resource management practiced by Native artists. Ethnobotanist Rhiana Jones (Washoe) will be among the key project contributors from the Numu/Northern Paiute, Wášiw/Washoe, and Newe/Western Shoshone communities. NMA will produce related curricula for circulation to Nevada public schools and will co-publish an Indigenous plant guide with staff from the Stewart Indian School Museum and Cultural Center, in Carson City, that will include a facsimile of the booklet on Indigenous plants written by the boarding school’s students in 1936.  Â
