Description

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture is in dire need of ready funds to retain and support staff and constituents at this moment of severe earned-revenue losses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the letter attached here, MIAC’s director, Della Warrior, requests an emergency grant of $60,000 to support contract curatorial positions associated with the organization of loan exhibitions, and for the museum’s partner artists to create digital content for local Native communities as well as for the museum’s general audience. I wholeheartedly recommend approval of the proposed emergency grant. The funds would be drawn from the American Art Program’s 2020 allocation.
The Luce Foundation has previously provided two discretionary grants to MIAC, with the intention of making a more substantial investment in the near future. The museum is highly creative in its programming, particularly for Native audiences, and has nimbly strategized the activities to be underwritten by this grant in order to keep key projects moving forward and maintain contact with its communities.
The Foundation’s support of MIAC’s talented and highly committed staff at this critical moment, through this emergency grant, is a rapid and effective way to assist them in keeping their staff whole and active through these months of unprecedented challenges to the museum sector.
