Description

The Project :
Panorama was initiated by the Association of Historians of American Art (AHAA) as the first open-access, peer-reviewed electronic publication dedicated to U.S. art and visual culture. Now an established and valued resource, Panorama plays a significant role in the field of American art as a nimble venue for new information and thoughtful analysis. In addition to scholarly articles, Panorama publishes book and exhibition reviews, and short research notes. It also features “The Bully Pulpit,” a section pairing brief scholarly and polemical texts with responses from academics, curators, and critics.
The Henry Luce Foundation has previously provided three previous special grants to Panorama , in 2012, 2015, and 2017. The first funded the launch of the journal, and the second provided ongoing support, for subventions to authors, enhanced website design, and archiving content.  The journal experienced significant growth after the addition, in 2015, of positions for a managing editor and copy editor, funded for two years by the University of Minnesota’s College of Liberal Arts and Department of Art History.  The 2017 grant supported an additional year for the managing editor, as well as authors’ subventions, and hosting of the journal at the University of Minnesota Library.  The larger grant proposed here will be for continued support, underwriting three additional years of the two part-time positions and subventions for rights and reproduction fees. Funding will ensure the publication of six new issues (issues 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, 6.1, and 6.2), released in the months of May and November in 2018-2020.
Rationale for Support :
Panorama is established as a primary voice in the field of American art scholarship and museum practice.  The Foundation’s continuing support of the journal can be viewed as foundational to effective information sharing in the field.  The three executive editors continue to do an outstanding job in guiding the direction of the content and insuring the relevance of Panorama’s work in an ever-evolving field.   Statistics bear out their success: 290 subscribers as of January 2018, a 23% increase since January 2017; 15,823 unique session visits in 2017 (subscriptions not required), compared to 14,278 in 2016; and 35,303 page views in 2017, compared to 32,754 in 2016.
