Description

A first-time grantee, The Abbe Museum (AM) will initiate a term position for a curator of exhibits and collections to lead the museum’s decolonizing work in collections management, research methods, content development, and exhibit design. This key staff position will advance AM’s commitment to strengthening relationships and service to Wabanaki Nations in Maine and will also address increasing requests from external arts and cultural heritage partners for Wabanaki content that aligns with the priorities and practices of the Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy, and Penobscot Nations. Priorities will include developing exhibitions and interpretive content in consultation with the museum’s tribally-appointed Wabanaki Council, refreshing AM’s permanent installation, and managing AM’s Wellman Archaeology Research Laboratory and Collections Storage and the ongoing Traditional Knowledge Labels Project. The curator will additionally work toward the 2026 re-opening of AM’s historic (1928) Sieur de Monts location in Acadia National Park, and provide support to Wabanaki tribal museums and cultural centers, including providing access to AM collections and training of the next generation of Wabanaki museum professionals.
This grant aligns with the AAP strategic goal 1a: To advance innovative museum projects that prioritize representation and equity through the preservation, study, and presentation of work by under-represented artists of color, collaborations with diverse external partners, and outreach to underserved communities.
