Description

Carnegie Museum of Art (CMA) has organized a major exhibition of lens-based works by a diverse roster of 19 contemporary artists who address the indelible consequences of environmental degradation, and the shifting relationships between humans and the environment, to more fully understand the economic, political, and social forces that have shaped them. Focused on the visible effects of climate change, resource extraction, and colonization, the featured photographs, video, mixed media works, and immersive installations will call into question images of idyllic nature that have long dominated American visual culture. The exhibition will explore artistic engagement with the historical archive, manifestations of human complicity in environmental disasters, and the possibility of adaptation in a changed world.
This grant aligns with the AAP strategic goal 1a: To advance innovative museum projects that prioritize representation and equity through the preservation, study, and presentation of work by under-represented artists of color, collaborations with diverse external partners, and outreach to underserved communities.Â
