Description

A 12-month grant of $100,000 for installation of Across Asia: Arts of Asia and the Islamic World .   Total Budget:                                                  $646,000, 15% funded by HLF Other sources of support:                              E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation, The Freeman Foundation, Institute of Museum & Library Services.   Asian art constitutes roughly one-third of the Walters’ collections, much of it off-view for the past eight years during a major renovation. A new, long-term installation, Across Asia, will occupy the entire fourth floor of the museum, bringing objects from across Eurasia together in a contiguous space. As the only institution in Maryland with such strong representative holdings, the museum is uniquely positioned to make pan-Asian connections. Contemporary art will be displayed alongside regular rotations of historic works. The Walters’ new departments of Learning and Community Engagement and Visitor Experiences, with community input, will shape interpretative priorities grounded in DEI and access. Luce funding will support casework and other display systems; installation of artworks; in-gallery interactives (including video, scent, sound, touch); and labels.   This grant would advance Asia’s Goal 3 (enhance public awareness of and engagement with Asia).
