Administered by the Foundation’s Asia Program, the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (LIASE) was a competition for invited liberal arts colleges and formal associations of liberal arts colleges in the United States. LIASE aspired to encourage innovative approaches to Asian studies teaching and research at the undergraduate level through the lens of the environment and sustainable development. It aimed to bring Asia specialists and non-specialists together to enrich the study of the region, broaden literacy about Asia among new constituencies on college campuses, and inspire ideas for future work and study on pressing issues of the 21st century.

Learn about the outcomes and impact of the Luce Initiative on Asian Studies and the Environment (LIASE) in this recent report compiled by Ithaka S+R at the conclusion of the program’s grantmaking. The document features case studies on five grantee institutions: Centre College, EnviroLab Asia (the Claremont Colleges), Furman University, St. Olaf College, and University of Puget Sound.
