As part of a three-year initiative to examine and reimagine the Luce/ACLS Program in China Studies, which has supported research on China through scholarly fellowships since 2012, the American Council of Learned Societies convened scholars, experts, and practitioners in New York to discuss the state of the field and make recommendations on how to best support scholarship in China Studies.
Participants were energized and inspired by keynote speakers, roundtable sessions, and expert panels on topics including public-facing scholarship, at-risk subfields, and securitization.
Emily Baum, associate professor of modern Chinese history at UC Irvine, summarized some key points made by attendees over the course of the event:
