Description

This grant builds upon work begun by filmmaker Yehuda Sharim in the Luce-funded Carceral Lab project (2023). Sharim works collaboratively with students and communities to produce highly personal, meditative films that foreground the experiences of migrant workers, prisoners, and his own family, among others. The Carceral Lab grant enabled Sharim to develop relationships with prisoners and their families in Virginia and to produce films with their involvement. This supplemental grant will enable him to create two additional films that explore Virginia’s carceral communities. Sharim’s films query the meaning of democracy in a nation that incarcerates nearly 1% of its citizens at any given time.
